Wells City Harriers

aaaajunior start Jan 24

There was some good running in the cold conditions at the 201st edition of the Street races. Numbers were down slightly, no doubt because of the weather, but there were some intrepid newcomers to the race, or returnees from long ago – from Avon Valley Runners and Weston AC in particular. 57 finished the 5k, and 16 were in the junior races.

The junior races saw the usual enthusiastic group of the next generation of runners giving it a go and plaudits go to Oskar Beck & Elspeth Perkins, 1st boy & girl in the 2k race; and to Rowan Kelly & Florence Perkins in the 1k race.

In the 5k race u17 Tom Webb is really making a habit of winning. For the women, u20 Mai Davies (Swansea Harriers) had a long journey back home to Carnarvon with her dad straight after her race – so well done to her for making the long trip, and winning! Read on for results link.

In the main 5k race, Tom Webb stormed away from the very start. It’s hard to believe it was his 3rd race in 4 days – SW 1500m Indoors at the weekend; then Mendip schools XC a few hours before Street race! 2nd and 3rd were fellow Harriers Alexander Coombs,16.04, and Matt Lusby, 16.06, who had also competed hard over the XC at Sunday’s SW Championships, as had 4th placer Wayne Loveridge (Chard RR), 16.14.

For the women, Mai was a cut above all other participants on the night with her time of 19.09. Next in for the women was Phoebe Aspinall (Team Bath/Wells City ) in 19.47 and 3rd home was Rosie Park (Wells City Harriers) in 20.52.

Weston AC had made the race one of the Club Championship runs for 2024 so many thanks for them for turning up in numbers and likewise Avon Valley Runners who had heard about our last month’s 200th staging of the races, and the enthusiasm of some other of their members who have run here over recent years.

Remember, if you beat your previous time here this Series you can claim the Hecks Cider or Apple Juice as your reward. Next race is on Wednesday 14th February – number 202 in the sequence….please try and enter online in advance if at all possible.

Junior Races

Oskar Beck was also racing for the 3rd time in 4 days after winning the u13 SW XC Championships at the weekend and his Year 8&9 Mendip Area Schools XC race just hours before. Fellow Monday night junior Harriers Jack Barker and Toby Hirst in particular gave chase. Elspeth Perkins showed her resilience to win for the girls.

In the keenly contested 1k race, Rowan Kelly continues to dominate and my money is on him to win the 1k Series title this year! Likewise, Florence Perkins who seems to have a liking for winning the Apple juice every month.

Our usual thanks to the marshals, time recorders and all working behind the scenes - if you thought it was cold when running then spare a thought for the frozen marshals helping out!

Other than the next Street 5k races, the next local races that the Club is supporting (with advice, guidance and maybe some practical help) are the Babcary 7.5 mile hilly road race (great for those in half/marathon training) on Sunday February 25th - enter here and the Butleigh 10k multi-terrain on Sunday April 14th - enter here.

Below: most of the prize winners seen clutching their Pilton Cider and/or Somerset Cheese Company cheese, or their Heck's of Street Apple juice/Cider. Our thanks to the local businesses that help support the race - take a look at their websites and give them some business.
