Two of the talented Wells City Harriers juniors competed at last Saturdays (4th September) UK School Games held at Loughborough University. The Games cover multiple sports and bring together talented juniors from across the country. U17s Sophie Nicholls and Hannah Blundy were selected to run following good performances earlier in the season at the English Schools Championships.
Competing on the track in the 3000m against 6 other top athletes from across the UK, Sophie finished 3rd in 9.57, whilst Hannah was 4th in 9.58, her first time under 10 minutes and a 6 second personal best. Both Sophie & Hannah train with the Harriers Tuesday training group at Millfield track under the watchful eye of Simon. Hannah started training with the Club when age 11 and Sophie when she moved to start school in the area age 13.
In other action, a number of Harriers have been racing on the road. Deputy Chairman Christian Green won the Bridgwater Half in a new personal best time of 71.32 on Sunday with Chard’s Wayne Loveridge some 20 seconds behind in 71.51. Matt Lusby was 11th in 78.07.
Also on the Sunday, one of our Wednesday training group members v50 Chris Searle ran 3.35 for the Southampton Marathon finishing in 81st place out of 647 competitors, whilst Akom Srithunma finished the tree-lined Cheltenham Half in a solid 1.59.
The Monday junior training group for age 8-15 at the Millfield track venue has recommenced this week (6th September) with a number of juniors having a trial to secure a training place with the Harriers.
Club Secretary Paul Chadwick remarks “These junior sessions have now been organised by the Club for some 32 years and it’s refreshing to see the enthusiasm & athletic talent of the youngsters - not all make it to the national standard of Hannah & Sophie (above) of course but we’ve had some great juniors come through over the years. As we move into the autumn season we start to train specifically for cross country and longer runs of up to 5k, dependent on age, whilst still coaching sprints and long jump as long as the weather holds”
The Tuesday training session this week saw the use of the Millfield track floodlights for the first time this season when they came on just before 8pm as the sky darkened. We hope that as the evenings darken even earlier from now on that we can rely on the lights. The Tuesday training session plan for September & October is now on the training page and can also be seen here. It's always a good idea to know what training is on offer before you arrive.
The Harrier team managers have now entered the teams for the regional road relays to take place at Sutton Park on the 25th September - u17 men; senior men & veteran men.
