17 year old Harry Barton becomes the 10th Wells City Harrier member to be selected for TeamGB and will compete at 110m Hurdles for the British team this Thursday (19th August) in Manchester at a prestigious international event. Meanwhile, Senior Club coach Jon James has been posting another impressive 5km time to go further ahead in the national rankings for his age group (V55) and a host of Harriers are getting ready for the Somerset County Championships this coming weekend (21st/22nd August).
Harry started training with the Harriers on a Monday evening some 6 years ago and has competed on numerous occasions with the joint track & field team with the composite Yeovil Olympiads team, in the South West League, the Southern League and, this season, at the National League matches. This summer he won at the South-west Championships, won the English Schools Championships and was Silver medallist at the England Athletics u20 Championships.
The international match will see Great Britain and Northern Ireland U18s and U20s compete against squads from England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland as well as the National Athletics League.
Team Leader, Sharon Morris, said, “We are delighted that we have been able to give young athletes a further key opportunity to achieve a GB vest at the Manchester International and for them to gain great experience in pursuit of international age group competition in 2022. We have a very strong U18 and U20 team and I look forward to seeing them perform. I’d like to acknowledge the hard work that coaches have put in supporting these athletes in achieving their goals.”
Harry becomes the 10th Harrier member to represent TeamGB following on from Amber Gascoigne who was our very first back in 1999. You can see a full list on our potted history page here. As a consequence he will become an Honorary Lifetime Member of the Club.
Meanwhile, towards the other end of the age spectrum of our competitive athletes, one of our senior Club coaches Jon James has continued to improve his times this season and remains at the top of the national rankings for 5k for the v55 age group. Jon “I was 4th overall and that time (of 16.04) put me further ahead in the national V55 rankings for 5K - I was already first. A really quick course - 3 laps of an industrial estate near Westbury!” Alongside him in the photograph (below) taken near the start of the race is former TeamGB international Jo Pavey (on the right) with Jon wearing his purple SW Veterans vest in the middle.

& Cross-country on the way back?
It appears that the Gwent XC League will resume after a gap of a year....put a note in your diary and more information when received. If you can help team manage an age group at the XC matches that would encourage more to take part....
