Wells City Harrier members have again been out competing at a range of athletic disciplines this past week. U18 Harry Barton won gold (again) – this time at the South West Track & Field Championships, whilst the Harrier senior mens team were first at the Parrett 10km Multi-terrain, and a squad of the Club’s runners dominated at the various Frome road races. Club Treasurer Sharon Bowles even found time to run a 100km trail run ‘Race to the Stones’ in the heat over the weekend. Phew! Read on for info on next Wednesday’s (28th July) pub run too.

Parrett 10km Trail Race

The previous Thursday evening, 15th July, saw the Harriers send two teams of 6 to compete at an inaugural running of the Parrett 10k multi-terrain race starting and finishing at Langport. The race started by the Town Gardens and took competitors along the banks of the river to Oath, before turning inland to Aller Church, and then back to the river bank and the finish line.  John Glaisher led the winning Harrier team home with his front running in a time of 39.42, with team-mates Oli Frost 2nd in 40.37, and Henry Sage 3rd in 42.14. Other members of the winning Harrier team were Damien Pick, 42.27; Andrew Tindal 45.31; and Andrew Piper 48.36.

The Harrier Mixed team, with 3 women and 3 men, also finished well up in 4th place overall, with Rachel Glaisher leading that team with a time of 40.09, then Justin Thomas 46.40; Paul Chadwick 50.07; Phoebe Aspinall 50.33; Melissa Aspinall, 52.35; and Andrew Pate 58.23.

Frome Road races

Also running well in the heat of last Sunday were the Harriers at the various Frome road races with 15 year old Harrison Williams 5th in the 5km(18.19 pb) ; Alexander Coombs 9th (84.20) in the Half Marathon; whilst a Harrier clean sweep for 1-2-3 occurred in the 10km race with Zak Hurrell (33.31) leading home Christian Green (34.08) and Ben Lloyd (34.51).

Also in the Half marathon version, our partner Club (YOAC) Chairman, Geoff Cole was on pace-making duties (or was it the other way round?) with Rachel in the half, both finishing in 2.04. Gary Tubridy in 2.08 and new member Akom Srithunma also had a good run for 2.10. Mike Ommanney finished in 2.39. That’s some good running in that heat!

Spare a thought though for our Wednesday beginners group coaches who took part in the Race to the Stones event finishing at Stonehenge at the weekend. Sharon Bowles covered 100km and Lynne Elstob 50km – in that heat!

TRAINING UPDATE

Monday juniors at Millfield

We held the last of our junior Monday Harrier sessions on the 19thJuly before the coaches take a well earned break and these sessions start back on Monday 6th September. Last Monday we were really glad to be starting training at 7.15pm when some of the heat of the day had dissipated!

Any senior Club members also looking to gain their coaching qualification should contact Paul.

Bookings for the Monday training sessions re-open with all existing juniors asked to confirm their place by 1st September. Contact Paul for any further information. This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
