England Athletics have issued fresh guidance today to XC League organisers inviting them to apply for race licences for events to resume this autumn – is there some light at the end of the tunnel? Meanwhile the Harrier organised training session at Strode College on a Thursday evening continues to grow and Membership payments have flooded in this first week with some new members and some returning members signing up to make use of the training sessions and other Member benefits. Read on for the latest on XC and Memberships/Training.

Cross Country races poised to return?

Wessex League: On 19th August we heard from the organisers of the Wessex XC League that they did not envisage any of the original fixtures to go ahead for 2020 but that they were hopeful that they might have one fixture in December, which would also count as the Dorset XC Championships for those eligible to count in that.

Gwent League: We also know that the Gwent XC League hold their AGM on 25th September at which there will be discussion about whether fixtures can go ahead, where and when – watch this space or more pertinently the Team Competition page of the website which is updated when Team Managers or participants send news or reports in.

Announcements will also no doubt be made at Training by team managers, and you could also request to be on their email lists for an update as and when a fixture is announced.

Contact Dave Kitcher who has taken over the role of Team liaison/manager for Wessex League from Neil Biss – Dave is available on This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Contact Graham Goldsmid/Jon James/Simon Prior for the Gwent League. As team managers they will be in touch with any that sign up to receive an email from them when there is news & Dave has already sent an email around to all that were on the previous email list managed by Neil.

The website will as ever carry reports of any races/fixtures that take place but Members must assist Team managers by compiling reports and sending in good quality images.

Meanwhile, today, 28th August, England Athletics have announced the process and timetable for a return to XC competition. See: https://www.englandathletics.org/athletics-and-running/news/england-athletics-ecca-area-league-cross-county-update/

Road & off-road Racing?

We all know that there have been no actual races in Somerset since the lock down in mid-March but that some runners have found the value of Virtual races so as to maintain focus and a training goal. Some actual races are now returning – as I’ve previously mentioned to a few of the Members who had places in the now cancelled London Marathon, the Marathon on the Isle of Wight is still happening in October and I know a few from the training group have applied to compete there – should be a good weekend! Race is on 4th October with a closing date of 19th September, so for any that don’t want to waste their Marathon training that should be a good one to enter. Details here.

We hear, unsurprisingly, that the BHAM 10k trail race, also due to be held in October, is to be cancelled but await formal confirmation. As far as I can see that just leaves the potential of the Quantock Beast – re-arranged date of 15th November – and the Brent Knoll Fell Race, 29th November, as being possible races that take place in the County. No final decision has yet taken place about the Full Montycute Trail race either.

A virtual Street 5k? – The Race Director Lynne Elstob is considering the scope for a virtual 5k Series based on entrants running a measured 5k somewhere and emailing their times (with evidence!) to her each month. We will broadcast more information on this possibility when it is decided to proceed. Please contact Lynne for information about this.

Good luck to all Harriers competing either this week or next at the Track & Field events organised by our partner Club, Yeovil Olympiads - please send in any good photos or reports of Harrier participants to be included on the Harrier website.

Measured Distance running for a time at training?

Plans are afoot to organise a monthly time trial, following Covid-19 rules for Harrier members, at our regular weekly training sessions (currently held on a Thursday eve at Strode). The next Training schedule for September & October - see below - will include a slot each month for folk to run the measured distance – likely to be a choice of 3k or 5k -  and use it as a measure of fitness and see how they improve over the season.

Training Updates

There is still no news from Millfield as to when the facility may be available to hire. Various works, such as floodlighting, need to be completed before the autumn/winter if they are to be usable. Meanwhile the Thursday sessions on the grass at Strode College Sports Centre have been proceeding well with everyone following the Covid-19 procedures to keep them safe.

The Thursday sessions are open to Harrier Members and run 6pm-7.30pm with Members still asked to register by the night before to attend and they will be invoiced later for payment for the session (£2 a training session). Contact Graham to register to ensure there is space for you. The intention may be to hold training sessions on both a Tuesday and a Thursday evening when facilities are available and to see whether there is sufficient interest for two sessions a week. We will also need to ensure the two sessions are viable if we continue them over the autumn/winter period. This email address is being protected from spambots. On a different matter, please can any parent or athlete advise Graham or I if they have a valid First Aid qualification in order for us to keep a register of those members/parents with such a qualification.

The Training programme devised by Jon James for THURSDAYS (Sept & October) is posted on the training tab as per usual and also below.

MEMBERSHIPS

Many thanks to all that have paid their annual subs in the past week or so using the PayZip method generated via the England Athletics portal. A few queries and anomalies were thrown up on the system which we are working through and a small number of members had difficulties emailing in queries. We are working to resolve these but if you’ve mislaid your PayZip request, or are someone looking to join the Harriers to join our Training & Competition programme then please check to see if the answer can be found on the Membership webpage or email Paul who is looking after memberships as Alice is a tad busy. This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

(note - that in addition to some e-mail difficulties members have been having to contact us we have also encountered problems with the EA Club Membership portal which we hope can be resolved next week - don't panic!)
