Wells City Harriers

"A FRIENDLY RUNNING CLUB THAT WELCOMES ATHLETES OF ALL AGES AND ABILITIES"

There was a good turn-out of runners from near and far at the 169th edition of the Street 5k races on Wednesday 11th October. Finishing in first place was Bridgwater’s Matthew Cox, a member of a local triathlon club, in a nippy 16.55. Chasing him all the way was u15 Wells City Harrier Matthew Quarterman in 17.19 which is a new personal best. 3rd overall was 1st V40 Tom Dukes (Wells Harriers), 17.23, with his son Dylan hot on his heels on every lap, finishing in 18.08. First for the women was F45 Elizabeth Parry, 22.44, winning the sprint finish from 2nd placed F35 Claire Lay, 22.46. In the 1k junior race Owen Dukes had a good attempt at the course record but was 13 seconds short this time round when winning. Alice King was 1st for the girls over 1k. In the 2k race Logan Moncrieff and Isabelle Walker won. Read on for full results and report. Well done to all runners especially if this was your very first Street race! The 29th season of the Clive & Angela Thomas Street 5k Series saw 72 finishers in the 5k race, with a good sprinkling of quality runners in the accompanying junior races. Conditions on the night seemed good for running despite a heavy shower an hour before the race possibly leaving the road a bit slippery on the corners.

In addition to the overall winners, age category awards were made to the following athletes: 1st male junior Matthew Quarterman; 1st V40 Tom Dukes; 1st V50  Adrian Moore (u/a); 1st V60 David Carnell (Maiden Newton Runners); 1st V70 Berni Mundy (Wells City Harriers); 1st female junior Melissa Pritchard (Wells City Harriers); 1st F35 Claire Lay (u/a); 1st F45 Teresa King (Weston AC); 1st F55 Karen Shears (Wells City Harriers); 1st F65 Lesley Nesbitt (Yeovil Town RR). Best age-graded performance was by Lesley who ran 25.18 for a 84.4% grading. Lesley was only 20 seconds down on her own F65 course record. The only other 80%+ grading was by 2nd placed Matthew Quarterman with 80.2%.

The Club’s thanks once again to all marshals, finish recorders and other officials who helped the event go like clock-work. The next Street 5k event will be on Wednesday November 8th. Please keep your number for next time. Previous Street 5k times & course records for all races can be found as usual here.
