Harriers conquer 103 mile Cotswold Way again , whilst Luke goes sub-4 for 1500m. Plus - Latest standings in the Somerset Race Series sponsored by M5 Glass/Yeovil Glass

Wells City Harriers had two teams out competing in the 103 mile off-road Cotswold Way relay this past Saturday 24th June. With the first leg starting at 7.00am at Chipping Camden and the final leg 10 finishing by the doors of Bath Abbey it made for another great day out for the fell runners in the Club. The team included some making their debut for the Club at the event as well as others who have been through several if not all of the legs, twice over in one case! There was a record entry of over 100 teams this year, a far cry from 1994 when the Harriers made their debut amongst 13 teams in total. Meanwhile, forsaking being part of the Harrier team in pursuit of his first sub 4 minute 1500m time was Luke Prior.(Photo of Laura, Mike, Pete & Paul by Laura’s assistant).

Starting off for the Harrier teams on leg 1 were Katrina Prior, home in 1.50 (59th) and Alice Knight (2.02, 90th).  Leg 2 was carried on by John Glaisher and Andrew Pate, with John having one of the best Harrier finishes of the day in 8th place, 1hr30mins, and Andrew home in 2.02 (65th). John was running the Relay for the first time. Andrew & Alice camped the night before in preparation for their early stages. Leg 3 was run by Mike Bosley and Peter Clothier, and they were pretty evenly paced with Mike home after 1.09 (22nd) and Peter 1.11 (30th). Leg 4 was then taken on by Justin Thomas and Hywel Thomas, who look as if they were matching each other stride for stride in 1.50 in 44th & 45th positions. On leg 5 Andy Piper was home after 1.42 (51st) and Oli Harras ran 1.46 (66th). For Oli this was his first appearance at the Cotswold Way Relay.

On leg 6 Laura Darby-Jones and Nick Weaving ran together, coming home in 1.26 (54th & 55th). On leg 7 Jo Tibbatts and Graham Goldsmid had good runs, with Graham achieving the 2nd Harrier top-ten finish in 8th place with 57.48 and Jo back in 1.09 (57th). On leg 8 Simon Carr recovered from his previous weekend’s half-ironman with 1.52 (60th) and was joined by last minute recruit Luke Clifton, who was finished in 1.44 (41st). Luke came over from Andover to join us and is more used to running 100km on his own rather than as part of a relay – he runs in one of the Mt Blanc mountain ultras later this summer.

On leg 9 Pete Darton was home in 30th place with 1.16 and Mike Rusca ran 1.19(42nd). On leg 10, the glory leg, Jonathan Davies ran with team-manager Paul Chadwick. Earlier in the week, Jonathan answered the call to replace Luke Prior (see below), whilst Paul was running his 20th Cotswold Way relay and has now become a double ‘King of the Cotswolds’, having run the legs in consecutive stages. Jonathan’s time was 1.14 (22nd) with Paul 1.24 (53rd). The final times over the 103 mile course for the Harrier teams were 14hours 54 minutes for the Mixed team ; and 15hrs 53mins for the Seniors team.

Leg 10 this year had a much bigger and better finish atmosphere as many of the teams (1000 plus runners over all legs) stayed to cheer in their team members. The Harriers traditionally enter teams into 2 or 3 off-road relays every year, with the Committee agreeing to pay Harrier members entries: Wessex Ridgeway (May); Cotswold Way (June) & Parrett Relay (Oct). Any member can be part of a team as the aim is always to enter 1 more competitive team and 1 or more sociable team. If you would like to be a member of a team let Graham or Paul know; or if you want to manage a Harrier team at what will be a sociable test run of the Parrett Relay course this year on Sat 7 October, please step forward!

LUKE GOES SUB-4

Luke Prior ran leg 10 at last year’s Cotswold Way Relay and won that leg. He was pencilled in for leg 10 again this year but instead spotted the opportunity to lower his 1500m track time at a BMC meeting at Watford on the same day. He achieved his aim with an excellent 3.59 clocking. Check out his great running on the BMC video here - Luke running in the YOAC track & field vest as per usual:
