Congratulations to Luke on his Southern Counties title; Good running at June Yeovilton 5k and Beacon Batch Fell race; & Blast from the Past

Congratulations to Luke Prior on his Southern Counties u20 5000m title achieved at Crystal Palace recently in a new pb of 15.14. Luke finished well clear of the chasing pack in these prestigious championships. Meanwhile a large contingent of Harriers ran well at last Wednesday's Yeovilton 5k road race, with Philip Bridge first Harrier home in 3rd place with 15.44. Also finishing 3rd was Chris Green at the tough little Beacon Batch fell race on the Mendips this Tuesday. This months 'Blast from the Past' is the photo of the first ever Harrier team to compete at the Cotswold Way Relay, in 1994 (photo by Tim Wray):

At the Beacon Batch fell race on Tuesday 20th June a useful squad of the Harriers fell runners competed in the 5 mile, 1,000 foot of climb, race to the top of the Mendips. Most of the team members came home with a prize! Chris Green was quickest - back in 3rd place in 36.12; then Nick Somerville in 18th winning 1st V50 (42.21); and Chris Kelsey, 2nd V60 in 44.49; followed by Peter Clothier in 49.35; and Paul Chadwick (3rd V60) in 49.50; and finally Oli Harras (3rd u23) in 52.35.

Chris Kelsey was also in fell running action last weekend at the latest of the English Fell Running Championships counters when he took on the Tebay Fell Race covering 8.1 miles with 2,999feet of ascent. He finished in 296th place out of 451 in 1hr 46 mins. The next local Fell race is at Charmouth on 1st July; and we also have Crook Peak Fell Race to look forward to in August (see calendar entries)

A number of these members are also running this coming weekend at the Cotswold Way Relay, where Jonathan Davies has come into the team in place of Luke Prior on the glory leg of Leg 10. This will be the Harrier's 22nd consecutive year of competing, with the sequence only broken by the Foot & Mouth year when off-road running was not allowed. The photo above is from the first ever team of 1994, hurriedly put together by Paul and Helen. How many Harriers do you recognise?

Left to right: Chris Storie (leg 5); Helen Rutter (leg 3); Angela Thomas (leg 7); Phil Marsh (leg 4); Terry Shaw (leg 10); a young Christopher Storie; Paul Chadwick (leg 1); Tatiana Storie (leg 6); Terry Kingham (leg 8); Stuart Marsh (leg 9). Tim Wray (leg 2) was the other team member - Tim was signed up last minute to the relay after the previous Wednesday's Harrier training run!

The deadline for payments to reach England Athletics is 30th June for any member renewing their membership. Failure to renew will mean you will have to pay the £2 surcharge at road and multi-terrain races and be barred from various Championship races. Remember your money has to reach EA by that date so if you've not actually given your money to the membership secretary already then you will probably miss the deadline!

New Members can continue to register.

We can only post up reports on the Club's official website page if they are submitted to us! If you are at a competition involving Harrier or YOAC members you can submit a report , and photos. We prefer that the report covers all of the eligible members (not just about you!). If you submit it to Paul by 8pm on the Monday there is some hope of it being printed (at least in part) in that week's Mid-Somerset Series of newspapers. If we miss that deadlne then it wont appear. The more reports we get the better and more comprehensive our coverage of all things athletics!
