Excellent performances by Harriers over the Bank Holiday weekend; Somerset multi-events; Glastonbury Runs; Three Peaks Fell Race; British Milers Club races

There were well over 40 Wells Harriers competing across the Bank Holiday weekend: at track & field in the multi-events at Millfield School; at the Glastonbury Road Runs; at the Yorkshire Three Peaks Fell Race; and at the British Milers Club middle distance event at Millfield. Some excellent performances across the weekend!

Somerset schools Multi-event Championships

Al Thorner reports:

“It was a great U17 Somerset Schools Heptathlon Championships at Millfield for Elise (Thorner) at the weekend. Ranked second at the start of the competition she equalled her PB in the HJ, set new PB's in the 200m and Javelin. In the last event she had to beat her main rival and classmate at Millfield Anna Brophy, by 12 seconds in the 800m to win the Somerset Championships. In wet and windy conditions she set a new Pentathlon 800m PB by over 2 seconds in 2.17 but only beating Anna by 11 seconds, resulted in a silver medal out of the Somerset competitors and 5th in the competition out of 25 starters overall including guests. She also also achieved the fastest girls 800m on the day of any age, the most points scored in a single event of any competitor and a new Heptathlon PB by nearly 100 points which currently ranks her 5th in the UK for 2017. “

Also competing at Millfield was Toby Watson in the Junior boys (Years 8 &9) pentathlon with marks of 17.46 for the 80m hurdles; 5.36m in the shot putt; 4.14m in the Long Jump; 1.33m clearance at High Jump and finishing off with a 2.31 at the 800m . Kai Snell finished 15th for the Junior girls in the pentathlon (75m Hurdles rather than 80mH) Kai’s marks were: 14.86-5.48m-1.39mHJ -4.32mLJ-2.34, whilst Kitty Walker was 24th with 15.70-7.49m-1.30mHJ-4.09mLJ-2.48. Kai & Kitty both moved up strongly as the events took place.

Three Peaks Fell Race

Meanwhile, taking to the fells in his new V60 category was Paul Chadwick who ran in the Three Peaks Fell Race in the Yorkshire Dales, taking in Pen-y-Ghent; Whernside and Ingleborough fells with 24 miles of distance and 5,200feet of ascent in total. Conditions were good for the mountains. and the route took him under the Ribblehead viaduct on the Settle to Carlisle railway line, and entailed a short section of near vertical climb. Not for the feint hearted but for those who like a ‘marathon with mountains’, Paul had a good run and picked up some 50 places or so in the second half of the race to finish in 5hours 7 minutes. The race also doubled as a trial for the TeamGB mountain running team for a forthcoming Long distance mountain race in Europe.

More fell races are listed on the Fell Runners Association website; and Paul will be going to the Southern Fell Running Championships again this coming September on the Isle of Wight – 3 races in 2 days for any Harrier that fancies a crack at these Championships.
