The Harriers once again had two teams of ten competing on this off-road fell running relay down the spine of the Cotswolds, following the waymarked 103 mile Cotswold Way path on Saturday (25 June). The Harrier’s senior men’s team finished 6th, out of 17 teams in that category, in a time of 13 hrs 31 mins (11th overall out of 100 teams); and the Harrier mixed team 8th out of the 52 teams in that category, in a time of 15hrs 26 mins. (33rd out of 100 teams overall). Headlines were made by Andrew Deamer completing his King of the Cotswolds circuit having covered all 10 legs; and by Jack Bancroft, setting a new stage record for leg 6, by over two and a half minutes; and by Luke Prior winning stage 10 on his debut at the event. (photo of Andrew running in towards the finish of leg 8 by Gill T)
This was the 21st year of the Harriers fielding competitive teams, with two Harriers out of the 20 competing making their debut, Andy Piper and Luke Prior; one completing their King of the Cotswolds circuit, of all 10 legs, Andrew Deamer, and one on their 19th relay leg.(you know who!). Legs 2, 4 and 8 are the toughest of the ten but all offer a great challenge.
Some legs were run in torrential rain with thunder and lightning overhead; whilst in between there was glorious sunshine. All legs had their fair share of mud to contend with. The Harrier teams got underway on leg 1 at 7.00am at Chipping Campden with Jo Tibbiats, supported by her family, and Simon Prior getting up super early to make the best of starts. Simon was 37th and Jo 49th (9th woman). Both Simon & Jo came and supported on the final leg and were there outside Bath Abbey at the conclusion of leg 10 – well done to Jo’s kids & hubbie for their stamina! (a relay team for the future!)
Chris Green stormed around leg 2 in a super quick time for 3rd place with Pete Clothier putting in a good shift for 47th place, in what was his 2nd race of the week (see below). On the 3rd leg, Hywel Thomas suffered a re-occurrence of an injury but managed to hobble round for 55th, so as to keep the team going; Alice Knight ran a good leg for 78th. On the 4th stage Justin Thomas didn't get lost and was 17th with Lucy Heath back in 54th (9th woman) when she managed to latch onto another runner who led the way. Leg 5 saw Andy Piper making his debut with a solid 37th placing, with Laura Darby-Jones coming back from injury not too far behind in 41st place (7th woman).#lovecotswoldway
Leg 6 saw our course record breaking runner Jack Bancroft run well inside the old mark to win his bottle of champagne. This follows up his recent Midlands County Championships Track victory over 5000m – so a truly versatile runner. Jack has won before at the relay. Chris Kelsey was 21st, in what was probably his 3rd race of the week, and before he went on to another orienteering event(!). Leg 7 saw Timmy Hawkins run ‘blind’ – i.e. run on another runners shoulder – but get out-sprinted to the finish line, for a great 2nd place. This was Tim’s 2nd race of the week – see below. Steve Masters, who came in as a late replacement, didn’t have chance to recce and finished an excellent 17th, as he recovers from injury. (photos below of Tim & Steve at finsh of leg 7 and team managers Mike & Paul before leg 9 by Paul)
Leg 8 saw Andrew Deamer complete his set of all 10 legs – he advised that he’d ‘tapered’ for the run; whilst team-mate Andrew Tindal, was coming off the back of a 3hr 4mins time at the Yeovil marathon some 2 weeks ago. I don’t know if Andrew D noticed the special fly-past by 4 jets that marked his ‘full set’ of legs which took place minutes after he’d started? The two Andrews got a proper drenching on their leg but still managed to finish well up in 6th & 9th. They even seem to be smiling in all the photos

Leg 9 saw 'you know who’ complete his 19th Cotswold Way relay leg in sequence. Paul was running his 3rd race in 5 days (see below) and ran in for 29th place, closely followed by Mike Rusca, making steady recovery from recent injury, in 32nd place. Paul & Mike not only got completely drenched but also had thunder and lightning to think about.
For the glory leg (10) we welcomed 18 year-old Luke Prior to make his debut, and he didn’t disappoint taking victory by a clear margin. This follows on his recent Southern u20s track 5000m title. Luke gained a bottle of champagne for his victory. On the same leg was another Harrier team relay stalwart, Liz Green, who has been ‘round the block’ with this relay (Queen of the Cotswolds) and ran in for 87th place.
