Wells City Harriers were once again out competing at Track and Field and road races this past weekend of June 6th and 7th. Some of the juniors were looking to establish fast times on the track at Milton Keynes to help them qualify for the prestigious English School Championships, whilst others were competing for the joint team with Yeovil Olympiads in the British Mens League fixture at Bedford, and another squad of Harriers were winning at the local Crewkerne 10k road race, whilst Deb Glover won the Poole 5k race. These photos below from Milton Keynes taken by Al Thorner.
U15 athlete Elise Thorner ran inside the English Schools entry level when she ran a nippy 2.18 for 800m at the BMC meeting in Milton Keynes. This sets her up nicely for this Saturday’s Somerset Schools Championships at Millfield where she will need another impressive performance in order to be selected for the County team that will go to Gateshead next month. Meanwhile her twin-brother Ollie was achieving a 1.73m high jump at Millfield on Saturday to beat the English Schools entry level for that event.
Also at Milton Keynes, u20 Harrier Isobel Glaisher ran inside the national entry level over 3000m when she clocked 10.13, and this follows on from her going inside the 1500m entry standard when she recently ran 4.35 at a BMC meeting in Exeter. Also at Milton Keynes, Emily Smith went to 7th on the 2015 national rankings for the u23 2000m steeplechase when she clocked a pb of 6.57; and Sam Sommerville also had a good steeplechase when recording 6.25 over the same distance.
On the road, Deb Glover was first woman home, in 10th place overall, at the Poole 5km road race in 20.24. On the same day there were 8 Harriers competing at the latest in the Somerset Race Series races, sponsored by Yeovil Glass, when they toed the line at the very hilly Crewkerne 10km road race. Kieran Young made it 5 wins out of 5 in the Series to date when he won in 35.55 and led the men’s team home to victory. John Glaisher was 5th, 1st V50 in 38.57, Steve Masters 6th in 39.24, and Justin Thomas 9th in 40.54 to complete the winning Harrier team. Justin continues to lead the Somerset Series due to his having run well and clocked up more performances to date, compared to Kieran.
Other finishers at Crewkerne were Andy Piper, 27th in 45.03, Rick Dukes28th in 45.04, Paul Chadwick 48th in 47.47 and new Harrier member Adrian Davis 70th in 50.12. There were 177 finishers. The next race in the Series is at the Tin Tin Ten on Wednesday June 24th, but the next challenge for some Harriers will be the Beacon Batch Fell race to the highest point on the Mendips on Tuesday 16th.Harriers should also note that the Somerset County AA Road Championships are held at Burnham on the eve of Thursday 25th covering a fast flat 5km course with County medals up for grabs. The 2nd of the British Men’s League matches was held at Bedford on Saturday and the combined Yeovil and Wells team again finished 3rd out of the 8 competing teams. Sam Harding ran a useful 400m/800m double achieving 53.05 and 2.02. Luke Prior ran 16.32 for the 5000m, whilst his father new Harrier Chairman Simon Prior, gained valuable team points with his 20.42 for 5000m and 13.24 for the 3000m steeplechase. Simon’s 5000m race was apparently 1 lap too many. The joint team is the only one in Somerset to compete in the National League.
On Saturday, a large number of the juniors will be racing at the Somerset Schools Championships at Millfield, and we wish them, and their fellow competitors all the best in their efforts. Full details about all these events on the Harrier calendar.
Does anyone want to be a ‘guinea pig’? Simon has received a request for participants to take part in some research – candidates need to have a marathon in them……and be prepared to travel, but there is some help with accommodation and you get the full suite of tests:
“Hello,
I am writing to let you know about a research opportunity that may be of interest to you or your members. I am a PhD Student working as part of a research team at the London Sport Institute within Middlesex University. We are currently recruiting recreationally active males (18-50 year old) with an expected marathon completion time of 4 and a half hours or less to investigate the effects of cryotherapy and/or cherry juice supplementation on markers of muscle damage, pulmonary inflammation, respiratory symptoms and recovery following a 26.2 mile running race. Participants will be allocated to one of the following intervention groups; Whole Body Cryotherapy (WBC); Cold Water Immersion (CWI); Cherry Juice (CJ) or Control. Participants will be asked to attend our labs at Allianz Park on 3-5 separate occasions in order to complete the testing during between June and August 2015. In lieu of payment for participation, we are offering free physiological testing (determination of running economy, lactate threshold, VO2 max, total body composition (via DEXA), and lung function) to all participants who complete the study. These tests usually cost over £500, are routinely utilised by Olympic athletes and will provide information to help you guide training and maximise your performance.
